What it is

The 172 Skyhawk is the most-produced aircraft in aviation history — more than 44,000 built since 1956 — and it fills two overlapping missions: primary flight training and simple, affordable personal transport. That production run spans seven decades, so "a 172" covers an enormous range of airplanes: early straight-tail 172s, the long-running fixed-gear/fixed-pitch 172N/172P workhorses, and the current 172S Skyhawk SP with a Lycoming IO-360 and Garmin G1000 glass as standard. Most 172s in the used market spent real time as flight-school trainers, which is normal for the type and not automatically a red flag — but it does mean buyers need to compare like sub-variant to like sub-variant rather than treating "172" as one airplane with one price. Its handling and systems simplicity are exactly why it has remained the standard primary trainer for so long, and why it's also a genuinely practical, low-drama first airplane for a new owner-pilot who isn't chasing speed.

Key specs to check

TTAF — high total time (5,000–10,000+ hours) is common and generally acceptable for the type given the airframe's design margins and a history of factory remanufactured engines, but it needs a clean logbook trail, not just a low asking price. Engine time against a roughly 2,000-hour recommended TBO (Lycoming O-320/O-360, or the fuel-injected IO-360 in the 172S). Confirm the exact sub-variant and avionics generation (steam gauges vs. G1000/G1000 NXi) — this is where 172 pricing diverges the most. Ask directly about rental or flight-school history, and specifically about any prop-strike or sudden-stop events and whether the required engine teardown inspection was completed and documented — this is the single most consequential trainer-specific check. Also confirm useful load and seating limits against the specific sub-variant and any installed options; older straight-tail airframes carry noticeably less useful load than later, higher-gross-weight models.

Common gotchas

Prop strikes and sudden stops are the defining 172 gotcha: a bent prop from a hard landing or a strike during taxi requires a manufacturer-specified engine teardown and inspection, and skipping it (or doing it off the books) is a real risk hiding in busy trainer histories. Look for it explicitly in the logbooks, not just for damage history in general. Beyond that: outdoor tie-down corrosion on airplanes based at humid or coastal fields, worn interiors and avionics from heavy student use, carbureted-engine carb-ice awareness on the older O-320/O-360 models (vs. fuel-injected IO-360 in the 172S), and logbook gaps from an airplane that's changed hands — and flight schools — many times over 40-plus years. None of these are reasons to avoid the type; they're reasons to insist on complete logbooks and a real pre-buy rather than trusting a low price alone. Also check for aftermarket STCs (autopilot upgrades, engine conversions, extended-range tanks) and confirm the accompanying paperwork is actually in the airplane's records — an undocumented modification can complicate both airworthiness and resale later, even on an otherwise clean, low-price trainer.
